Cuticle Oil Benefits
So you might be wondering, why should I use cuticle oil? Just like how you moisturize your body, your cuticles need to be moisturized also. Not only does cuticle oil it moisturize, it also protects against damage while strengthening your nails.
There are soooo many things that can damage your cuticles, including soap, sun, cold winter weather and picking at them. In Michigan’s Upper Peninsula where I live, we have very cold winters that wreak havoc on my hands.
Reduces Hangnails
Another reason why moisturizing your nails and cuticles is important, is it can reduce hangnails. And hangnails are the worst. But how?
Hangnails are caused from small tears in the skin by the cuticle. They can also be caused from clipping your cuticles. By preventing these small tears in the cuticle, you can prevent hangnails. Or at the very least, reduce them.
How Often Should You Use Cuticle OIl
Always, or as often as you can. I recommend that if you can only use it once a day, to use your cuticle oil before going to bed. This way you allow plenty of time for the oils to absorb into your skin. It’s also the best time to use cuticle oil, because you are not going to be washing your hands or subjecting your cuticles to anything damaging while you sleep.
You can also use it right after showering and throughout the day depending on how dry your cuticles get.
When I am making a lot of body care products, I have to use cuticle oil a lot. You are constantly washing your hands, washing dishes and wearing latex gloves. Basically, doing everything your cuticles don’t like.

You only need a small amount of oil for your nails. This is why I prefer to use a small glass bottle with a pipette top. You could also use a roller bottle or one with a brush on the lid (like a nail polish bottle).
You will want to apply a drop or two of the diy cuticle oil to one nail. Next you are going to massage it into your cuticle and skin around your nails. I will normally rub it all the way around my finger. Repeat for each finger, trust me your cuticles will thank you.
DIY Cuticle Oil Ingredients
Carrier Oils
Jojoba oil
Jojoba oil is the perfect oil for hydrating your nail bed. It is a fast absorbing oil that is able to penetrate your skin, because it’s molecules are very small. The makeup of jojoba oil closely resembles our bodies sebum. It will assist with repairing the collagen matrix – this is where our nails start to grow within our nail beds
Sweet Almond Oil
Sweet almond oil is my go to oil because it is so versatile. It is fast absorbing and nourishing for your skin.
Rice Bran Oil
Rice bran oil is extracted from the husk of rice. It is great for softening and conditioning your cuticles since it is rich with fatty acids.
Vitamin E Oil
Vitamin E oil is packed with antioxidants and helps to soften cuticles. It will also help to extend the shelf life of the other carrier oils used in this cuticle oil.
Essential Oils
Tea Tree Oil
Tea tree oil has anti-inflammatory and anti-fungal properties, this can help with any discoloration of your nails.
Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender essential oil is used since it is calming and soothing. Plus, it smells amazing when combined with the tea tree.
