DIY Citronella Candle

citronella candle

I was reading by the fire, which is way better in theory than it was in real life, because the bugs were eating me alive. I decided to whip up a DIY Citronella Candle to try to keep them at bay. I really do think it should be super relaxing to read by a fire and I need to try this again with my candles.

how much wax do i need for this candle

If you do not know how much wax you are going to need to fill your container, there is a way to get pretty close. To do this estimate, you are going to want to place your empty container on the scale and press the tare button. This is going to make the scale read “0” while the container is on it. Fill the container with water and place it back on the scale. This will be roughly how much wax you are going to need. Well, it tends to be just a little bit over, but it will get you pretty close.

Since this is an outdoor candle, I am using a wax blend so it doesn’t melt in the sun. I am doing a 70:30 soy wax to beeswax ratio. The Beeswax has a higher melting point than the Soy Wax, so it will harden the candle up.

Prepare Terracotta Pot – Flip your Terracotta Pot over and place some tape on the bottom to cover the drain hole. Put a small amount of hot glue on the Candle Wick tab and place it in the center of your Terracotta Pot.

Add Fragrance – Remove from heat and allow to cool down a bit. Add Citronella and stir well. I like to stir for about 1-2 minutes to to make sure everything mixes together.

Pour Candle – Slowly pour the wax into your terracotta pot. Use a pencil or a marker (whatever you have on hand) to center the wick.

Cool Down – Allow the candle to cool completely. Trim wick to 1/4 inch.
