What does an exfoliating lip scrub do for your lips?

Using an exfoliating lip scrub on your lips will remove the dead skin that builds up. It will not only improve how your lips look but also the feel of them.

How often should I exfoliate my lips?

The maximum that I would use an exfoliating lip scrub is 1-2 times per week. This is something that I use as needed when my lips have a buildup of dead skin.

Why do my lips need to be exfoliated?

Unlike our skin, our lips do not produce sebum. Our skin produces this and it helps it to stay moisturized. Since our lips do not produce any sebum, we should be applying a moisturizer regularly. Since our lips are exposed to the elements (cold weather and sun) they often need to be exfoliated to remove that dead skin.

Top 3 reasons to exfoliate your lips

  • Makes lips smooth and soft
  • Removes dead skin on your lipstick look better
  • Removing dead skin on lips that can  prevent chapping

How to exfoliate your lips correctly with exfoliating sugar scrub

Be Gentle

You never want to use any sort of pressure when you are using an exfoliator. You are going to allow the sugar to do the work. This will remove the dead skin without causing any damage to your lips.

Don’t Over Exfoliate

You will want to rub the exfoliating sugar scrub onto damp lips and gently rub in a circular motion. You can do this 1-2 times a week.

Hydrate

When you are done exfoliating, wash your lips and pat dry. Add a moisturizer to help maintain soft and smooth lips.

What do you need to make an exfoliating lip scrub?

There are so many different ways to customize a lip scrub to suit your needs.

Oil

You can use any carrier oil that you have for this scrub. I would suggest using an inexpensive oil like Olive Oil. There is no point in using something expensive if you are just going to be washing it off.

Sugar

Granulated Sugar is my favorite exfoliator for my lips. It has a good amount of exfoliating power but it is still gentle. I like that it will start to dissolve a bit while you are using it.

Honey

I wanted to add a little bit of a natural flavoring to this lip scrub, so I added a bit of honey. Honey is a humectant, meaning that it will attract moisture to your lips and hold it there. It is also said to have anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

If you do not have honey or prefer not to use it, you can swap this out for a lip flavoring or vanilla. Or, if you prefer you can just leave it out completely.
