I personally enjoy making the whipped soap base myself instead of buying the foaming bath butter or foaming bath whip. It is often called a foaming bath whip because it is not technically ‘soap’. In order to make a true soap, you need to use oils and lye and it goes through the saponification process. Instead of going through that process we use surfactants in this recipe.

What to add to a whipped soap base?

The exciting part about making a whipped soap base is that you can make so many different things from it. You can add butters and oils to make a moisturizing and luxurious soap. In addition to adding oils and butter, you can add sugar or salt to make an exfoliating whipped soap. Now the fun part is adding your fragrance oils and colors to really add some aesthetic appeal to your soap.

Ingredients to make Whipped Soap Base from scratch

unmelted surfactants

Sodium Coco Sulfate (SCS)

Sodium Coco Sulfate is a anionic surfactant. It comes in noodle and powder form, the powder would heat up a little quicker than the noodles do. SCS makes for a dense creamy foam in your whipped soap base. It is derived from coconut oil and is easily dispersed in water.

Caprylyl Capryl Glucoside

Caprylyl Capryl Glucoside is a liquid non ionic surfactant that is in liquid form. It make a lot of bubbles in this soap base. It is an excellent solubilizer, which will help you later when adding oils and butters to this base.

Stearic Acid

Stearic Acid is used to help stiffen up this soap base. We need it to have a little bit of a thicker consistency so that it will hold its whipped shape. Stearic acid leaves a velvety and slightly waxy consistency.

Vegetable Glycerin

Vegetable glycerin is a humectant, meaning it draws moisture and holds it to your skin. It is great for making the consistency of this bath whip more pliable.

Preservative

It is important that you add a preservative to your whipped soap base because it does have water in it. If you do not add one, this is only going to be good for a few days before you start growing some nasty bacteria in it. I am using Germall Plus in this recipe at 0.50%. The percentage that you need to use may vary depending on the preservative that you use. Just adjust the percentage to what your preservative calls for.
