Elements of a massage oil

To make your own massage oil you will need:

  • Carrier oils
  • Essential oils or Fragrance Oil
  • Container to store your oil in

What to look for in carrier oil?

Odor: Different oils have distinct aromas that you will want to keep in mind when formulating your massage oil as these odors can change the smell of your finished product.

Shelf life: Different oils have their own shelf life, keep this in mind when making your massage oil. Think about how long will you want to store the massage oil.

Skin absorption: In a massage oil, we want to choose oils that absorb kind of slow.

How it feels: You will also want to take in consideration how the oil leaves your skin feeling. You are going to want to stay away from oils that leave your skin feeling greasy or sticky. You want to use ones that leave your skin feeling soft and hydrated.

Carrier oils

Apricot Oil

Apricot oil is loaded with fatty acids and vitamin E. It is suitable for all skin types, including dry skin.

  • Odor: Faint nutty scent
  • Absorption speed: Quick

Argon Oil

Jammed packed with essential fatty acids and Vitamin E. I love how intensely argon oil hydrates the skin.

  • Odor: Slight nutty aroma
  • Absorption speed: Average

Fractionated Coconut Oil / MCT Oil

I have found that fractionated coconut oil gives the oil a lighter feel. It is also non greasy and it leaves your skin feeling silky (not greasy) once absorbed. It does not interfere with the aroma of your essential oils and does not stain your sheets.

  • Odor: none
  • Absorption speed: Fast

Grapeseed Oil

Grapeseed oil is a not too greasy oil and it is great for hydrating skin.

Odor: none
Absorption speed: Medium

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil technically isn’t an oil at all, it’s a wax. But it doesn’t feel like a wax it feels like an oil. Jojoba oil does not clog pores, like at all. It closely resembles the sebum that our skin produces naturally. And, it won’t stain your sheets!

  • Odor: none
  • Absorption speed: Average

Olive Oil

Olive oil is a great moisturizer. Since it absorbs very slow, you will want to use it in small amounts.

  • Odor: None
  • Absorption speed: Slow

Sweet Almond Oil

I love sweet almond oil as a massage oil because it absorbs slow and extends the glide time.
It is said to be able to provide some relief from itchy skin.

  • Odor: none
  • Absorption speed: Slow
