Jump to RecipeI want to be able to use blush, to get a more youthful or sun kissed appearance, but at the same time I want to know what is in it. It used to be true that blush was made with all natural ingredients, such as strawberries and beets. And, I want to get back to that. Plus, as you all know, i’m on a mission to ditch the store bought, one recipe at a time!

Blush Base
You will always want to start with your base ingredient first and then add the colorant to it. Seriously, this base couldn’t get any simpler, because it is one ingredient:
Arrowroot powder will apply to your skin evenly and is able to hold the color. Plus, I like the shimmer that arrowroot adds to the blush. It is a white lightweight and silky feeling powder.
Colorant
Ok, to start… am I the only one who thinks of Dwight (from the office) every time you think of beets? Ok, back on topic. We use beet root powder, because it is a great all natural colorant.
I use this for two reasons, the first because it smells just like roses and the second reason is it is a natural colorant.
Yes, that’s right cocoa powder. The kind you use to make no bake cookies, is used in our blush! It is such a great ingredient, because it is natural and it is able darken the blush easily.
Container
You can use any container that you would like, as long as it has a lid. However, I prefer to use the sifter containers. I like these, because you can easily mix up your powder and ensure you are not getting too much blush on your brush at a time.
Customizing for your skin tone
When you are making you blush, be sure to keep track of how much of each ingredient you use. This way, you will be able to easily recreate it.
Lighten
For a fair to medium skin tone, you might need to lighten your blush. To do this, just add some more arrowroot powder.
Darken
If you have a medium to dark skin tone, you might want to darken your blush. To darken, simply add a little more cocoa powder to it.
Tips on Applying Homemade Blush
You are going to get a better application of blush on moist skin. Feel free to apply right after a liquid foundation or after you moisturize for best results.
You use this product the same way that you use a mineral blush. Dip your brush into the container. Swirl it a little bit in the lid or on the sifter part of the container. Then, tap the excess off the brush and apply.
