I found that a lot of the solid perfume recipes include beeswax so I wanted to make one that does not. I decided to mix it up and make a Vegan Solid Perfume with candelilla wax. Making this was a bit of trial and error because candelilla wax is actually harder than beeswax, so it is not a 1:1 swap for these ingredients.

What is a solid perfume?

A solid perfume is a perfume that is made into solid form. It is the consistency of a lip balm and is packaged in jars or small tin containers. We use the candelilla wax as the base for this solid perfume because it will hold the essential oils on your skin and make the perfume last longer.

Although this is solid at room temperature, it melts easily when applied to your skin. I found that this vegan solid perfume is a slower release of fragrance than a typical perfume.

What ingredients go into a Vegan Solid Perfume?

Candelilla Wax

Candelilla wax is made from a vegetable wax from the euphorbia cerifera shrub by boiling the plant and skimming the wax off the top. The thing that I love about this wax is that it has more of a slip than beeswax does and it is more solid. It is similar to beeswax because it creates a waterproof film over your skin that will keep the perfume on you longer.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is a carrier oil that is used to soften the candelilla wax up to make it pliable. The jojoba oil is very similar to the sebum that our skin produces naturally. It is a liquid wax that is pressed from the Simmondsia chinensis beans.

Essential Oils

I used a combination of Sweet Orange Essential Oil and Geranium Essential Oil in my perfume. Check out below for some of my favorite essential oil combinations.

Best essential oils for a Solid Perfume

Ylang Ylang

I find that Ylang Ylang has a deep exotic floral aroma. I personally find this essential oil to be very relaxing and calming.

Rose

Rose essential oil is a top notch essential oil, however it is very expensive to get. If you have some, it will definitely make for a delightful solid perfume.

Lavender

Lavender is my favorite essential oil. I have to be honest, I used to not like the aroma of it AT ALL! And just one day, I started to love love love the smell. It is the ultimate relaxing scent for me.

Blending Essential Oils

The rule of thumb when making an essential oil blend is to have a top, middle and base note in the blend. The top note introduces the scent, the middle and the core to your solid perfume.

Top Notes

Top notes are the aromas that are first detected by our nose. They are the first impression that you will get from a perfume. The essential oils on this note typically you love or hate them. Typically they are fresh or sharp scents. However, these scents evaporate quickly and you almost cant smell them 10 minutes after you apply them due to their lighter molecular structure. Examples of top notes include:

  • Lemon
  • Grapefruit
  • Eucalyptus
  • Pine
  • Basil
  • Blood Orange

Middle Notes

The middle note is detected between 10-45 minutes after applying. It will typically be detected right after the top note goes away. The middle notes are the base of the perfume and can last on our skin for several hours. These essential oils are typically well rounded and very pleasant. Examples of middle notes include:

  • Lavender
  • Sage
  • Rose
  • Geranium

Base Notes

The base note is the fixative that holds the fragrance together, these notes will last the longest in your perfume. They tend to be deep and rich aroma that is detected after the top note dissipated. Examples of base notes include:

  • Patchouli
  • Sandlewood
  • Vanilla

Feel free to work on a blend following this guide or have fun and make a blend that speaks to you. For this Solid Perfume, I blended two of my favorite essential oils together and I am in love with it. It is all about what scents speak to you.

How to make Solid Perfume

Place the candelilla wax and jojoba oil into a heat safe container. Heat it on a double boiler until it is completely melted on a low heat. For a double boiler, I use a sauce pan with a silicone mat and an inch of water on the bottom. You are going to want to stir this occasionally while it is melting.

Add you essential oils and mix well.

Pour into your Solid Perfume Tin. Allow it to cool until it is solid.

It is really that simple to make! It hardly takes any time at all and makes for such a nice gift.

How long does Solid Perfume last?

I have found that the scent with this perfume can last up to 4 hours. You want to apply it to your pulse points for best results.

Keep in mind that this is a solid perfume, but you do want to avoid leaving it in the direct sun as it will melt at high temperatures.
