With fall upon us, I have been thinking of ways to improve my exfoliating lip sugar scrub. It got me thinking, I have a recipe for a lip scrub and one for a lip balm…. What if, I combine the two together? And that is exactly what I did to create this Sugar Lip Scrub Stick recipe.
I am not going to wait until winter has my lips all dried and chapped. Nope, not this year. This year, I am going to be proactive with my exfoliating sugar lip scrub stick. I am going to prevent that dry flaky skin that always seems to builds up on your lips.

Apply directly on clean lips. Using your finger tips, gentle rub over your lips to slough away those dead skin cells. You should rub in small circles for best results. When you are done, wipe remaining scrub off with a damp washcloth. Be sure to use lip balm to add some moisture to your lips after use.
Ingredients
There is a lot of different ways to make this sugar lip scrub stick. There are many ingredients that can easily be swapped out to give you the perfect scrub for you! Basically, there is nothing in this recipe that can’t be swapped.
Wax
I use beeswax to help to harden up this lip scrub stick so it does not just fall apart on you when you go to use it.
If you need to replace it, you can with:
- Soy wax
- Candelilla wax
Carrier Oils
For this sugar lip scrub stick I am using Sweet Almond Oil. I chose this oil, because it is wonderful at locking in moisture and it is packed with vitamins. It has Omega-6 fatty acids, which are known to regenerate skin.
If you don’t have sweet almond oil, there are a variety of different oils that you can use. Such as:
- Olive Oil
- Rice Bran Oil
- Avocado Oil
- Jojoba Oil
Butter
In this recipe I am using shea butter, because of its moisturizing abilities. It is an emollient which means that creates a protective like coating over your skin that helps to keep the bad out and moisture in. It also has anti-inflammatory and anti-aging properties that your skin will love.
Some other butters that you can use are:
- Cocoa Butter
- Mango Butter
- Coconut Oil
Vitamin E
We use vitamin E oil to prevent oxidation in our oils. By using a small amount of Vitamin E oil, you can extend the shelf life of your lip scrub stick. Especially because sweet almond oil is prone to oxidation.
If you don’t have any Vitamin E oil on hand, the scrub will be fine without it. It’s just going to help to extend the shelf life on it.
Sugar – Wait… won’t it dissolve?
You might be thinking, won’t the sugar just dissolve? Actually no. This is because sugar is not oil soluble, so it stays in sugar form to allow for a gently scrub.
The key to this recipe is too pour it at the right time. With lip balms, I will pour them as quickly as I can. However, with these, we do not want to pour them too soon or we could wind up with the sugar seperating from the oils and settling at the bottom.
On the flip side, if you wait until it’s too cool, it will not be pourable. So we are going to want to pour the lip scrub when it is a thicker consistency that allows the sugar to be evenly suspended in the oils.
If by chance you let it cool too much, you can always pop it back in a hot water bath to heat it back up.
Mica Powder
If you want to you can add some lip safe mica powder to you scrub. It is by no means needed but, I normally like to add a little bit. That way you know by the color, which flavor you’re grabbing!
Flavoring Oil
In this recipe, I use a very festive and delicious smelling flavoring oil…. Cinnamon Roll. The name “flavoring” is kind of misleading, because it does not actually flavor your lip scrub. It just adds a delicious scent to it.
By no means is this a necessary ingredient, but it really does take it up a level.
