How to use a shower steamer
You will want to place your shower steamer in the corner of the tub. Place it away from the drain and out of the direct spray of the shower. You want it to be in a spot where it gets a slight sprinkle of water.
To control how fast or slow the fragrance is released, you can move it closer to the running water or slightly further away. Another way to control the scent is by making the shower steamers smaller.
Eucalyptus Shower Steamers Ingredients
Baking Soda and Citric Acid
Baking soda and citric acid are used to create a fizzing reaction in out shower steamers. The fizzing starts once water gets on the shower steamer and it releases the fragrance into your shower.
Polysorbate 80
We use polysorbate 80 for a few reasons. We need something to ‘wet’ the baking soda and citric acid, that wont cause it to react. Unlike a bath bomb, where you can use oil, you want to avoid oils as they can be a slipping hazard. The last reason why we use it is to help to solubilize the essential oil to make sure it drains down the drain.
Eucalyptus Essential Oils
I used eucalyptus essential oil because it is said that the essential oil when mixed with steam reacts with our mucus membranes to reduce and loosen up mucus. Plus, eucalyptus is said to be a stress reliever.
Mica Powder
Mica powder is not necessary but I like to add a little bit to make them look nicer. Plus, I will have different scents in clear jars, so its easy to tell them apart by color.
Making Eucalyptus Shower Steamers
1. Weigh out all of your ingredients.
2. Put the baking soda and citric acid into a mixing bowl.
3. Add the polysorbate 80 and eucalyptus essential oils to the dry ingredients. Mix well, I find that it is best to mix it with your hands.
4. Add the mica powder and mix well.
5. Spray the mixture with a bit of witch hazel on to the shower steamer mixture. Mix well. (Use as little witch hazel as you can, adding too much can cause the shower steamers to start to activate).
6. Check the consistency. You are going for a wet sand texture. To test if it is the right consistency, squeeze a bit in your hand to create a ball. Then drop it from a few inches high back into the bowl. If it holds it’s shape, it is ready to mold.
7. Moving kind of quickly, put the shower steamer mix into the mold. You are going to want to press it firmly into the mold.
8. Unmold the shower steamers and allow them to dry out for about 24 hours.
