Homemade Lip Balm To Care For Your Lips Naturally

HOMEMADE LIP BALM

In this post I am going to show you how to make homemade lip balm. It is fast and simple to make with just a few ingredients. The oils that are used are super hydrating for your lips making them soft and smooth all day. There is a combination of fast absorbing oils and those that will absorb a little slower to maintain the slip you expect in a balm.

Why Do We Need Lip Balm? The skin on your lips is delicate and thin, they are susceptible to the elements. The dry cold winter air and sun exposure can damage them. This lip balm is designed to hold the moisture on your lips to keep them hydrated. Plus, it just feels good on your lips.

Once a week or so, I will use my Mango Lip Scrub and then apply my homemade lip balm. I do this to exfoliate any dead skin cells that are on my lips and then add the lip balm.

Let’s look at our ingredients:

Beeswax

The beeswax is an important ingredient because it is a natural thickener that will keep our balm hard. Beeswax will create a thin layer over our skin to protect it from damage.

Cocoa butter

Cocoa butter is super good at moisturizing the skin. It is a thick brittle texture that will improve the thickness of the homemade lip balm. Since it has a melting point right around body temperature it allows the lip balm to spread easily and is absorbed quickly into the skin.

Sweet Almond Oil

Sweet almond oil is high in Omega-6 fatty acids that are known to regenerate skin. It is not absorbed into the skin super fast, giving you balm extra slip for an extended period.

Rice Bran Oil

Rice bran oil contains Vitamin E, which is an antioxidant, meaning it helps to fight against free radicals. It also has a natural sun protection in it since it contains Gamma-orzyanol. Gamma-orzyanol is know to be effective at absorbing ultraviolet light.

Jojoba Oil

Jojoba oil is a great oil for our skin because its is a waxy ester that resembles our skin sebum. It is absorbed quickly into our skin and helps to rejuvenate the skin.

Mica Powder

Mica powder is completely optional, add it if you want some color in the lip balm. Be sure to use a mica powder that is lip safe. I do not give recommended amount to use as this is dependent on how you want the final balm to look.

How to prevent sinkholes in handmade lip balm:

picture of a sink hole in lip balm

This is a sink hole in the middle of the lip balm while it is still in the pouring rack

The best way to prevent sinkholes in your lip balm is to not pour the balm too hot. Try to pour below 130 °F. As the balm cools it becomes more dense. Remember that beeswax contracts when it cools down. The balm likes to attach itself to the walls of the tube. Then as it cools and shrinks, the center hole will appear.

Sinkholes can also be created from pouring too fast. When you pour too quick it can cause air pockets in the tube. When the balm cools it shrinks, making the sink hole. With time you will learn how to pour slowly. Don’t be worried that the balm will harden up while pouring because you can re-heat it.

If you have a filling tray, you can over fill it. After your lip balm has hardened, you simply scrape off the top layer. Leaving you will a perfect top every time.

How to fix sinkholes:

If you get a sink hole you can just leave it, that is what I normally do for the ones I make for myself. However, they can be fixed. Simply grab a blow dryer on a low heat and melt the balm to fill the sinkhole. Then add a little more balm to the top to cover the sinkhole.
