Shiny, strong and manageable hair can be yours, thanks to coconut oil. I am a huge fan of of this rich oil, I use it in whipped body butters, cold process soaps and it is a regular part of my hair routine. Coconut oil is a common ingredient that can be found in most homes. In this post I go over what it is, the many benefits for our hair and how to use it. One of the things that I like best about using coconut oil on my hair, is that it is an all natural ingredient. And….it is inexpensive. Without further ado, lets go over coconut oil benefits for hair and 6 ways to use it.

What is Coconut Oil & It’s Properties

Coconut Oil is made from the copra ( which is the dried meat) of matured coconuts. Coconut oil is a solid oil at room temperature and has a melting point of 75° F. The reason it is solid at room temperature, is due to to it high concentration of saturated fats. It is white and has a slight coconut scent. It contains roughly 90% saturated fats. The main type is lauric acid, which can help with hydration and contains antibacterial properties.

Helps Hair Health

So, we know that coconut oils is filled with saturated fats. These fats are able to penetrate your hair and replenish the lost moisture. Specifically, the medium chain fatty acids can, because they have a low molecule weight and a straight chained structure.

How To Use Coconut Oil For Your Hair

There are countless ways in which you can apply coconut oil to your hair. Try it today, to restore and hydrate your locks. You can decide it you prefer to use it before or after showering. It just depends on what you are looking for.

Reduce Fizzy & Dangler

Take a small amount and melt in your hands. Rub that on the areas of your hair where it is super frizzy or to prevent tangles.

Hair Mask

Use as a mask with some of you other favorite ingredients, such as honey or yogurt. Simply melt the coconut oil, mix with your ingredients and apply to hair. Leave on for an hour or so before washing out.

Deep Conditioning

Melt a small amount on your hair (avoiding scalp), brush through your hair. This can be left on overnight and washed out in the morning. You will want to use a cover on your pillow case to prevent it from getting stained.

Hair Growth

Take a small amount of coconut oil and massage on the scalp. This will help to improve blood circulation and stimulate hair growth. You can place on a shower cap and leave on your hair for an hour or so.

Dandruff Control

Mix coconut oil with essential oils. Try bergamot, lemongrass, tea tree, or thyme to assist with controlling dandruff. Then massage the concoction into the scalp. Allow to sit on the scalp for an hour before washing to hydrate your scalp and keep it smooth.

In your conditioner

Use it as one of your ingredients in your conditioners. I like to carefully choose each oil, to cater to my desired results. Put some thought into what you want to get out of the conditioner that you are making. Then work backwards from there.
