Bath Bombs Ingredients:

bath bomb ingredients

Baking soda and citric acid: The mixture of baking soda and citric acid are the two most important ingredients. When they are mixed together and come into contact with water, it creates a reaction, which is what causes the fizzing. There are no substitutes that you can use.

Epsom salt: Epsom salt is not an essential ingredient, it just adds a relaxation element to your bath.

Cream of tartar: We use the cream of tartar to make the appearance of the bath bomb nicer and to create a harder bath bomb. It also adds a silky feeling to your bath water. Typically, you are going to use this at a 3-5%. Adding too much will cause your bath bombs to get too dry and to crumble.

Polysorbate 80: We use polysorbate 80 to get the shea butter to mix in with the water. Without an emulsifier, the oil will not mix in with the water. The oil would just sit on top of the water and then the bottom of you tub when you drain your bath. It is also going to prevent the mica powder from creating a ring around your bathtub.

Shea butter: We add a little bit of moisture and hydration to our bath. The shea butter can be replaced with another butter or carrier oil of your choice.

Monkey Farts fragrance oil: I used monkey farts fragrance oil, because I love the scent and it was a fitting scent for a cupcake. You can swap this out for any fragrance that you would like. I have tried to make these with a chocolate scent, but I personally don’t love that scent in the tub. It just feels weird for me.

How to make Monkey Farts Bath Bomb Cupcakes

Making Bath Bombs:

1. Weigh out all of your ingredients.

2. Put the dry ingredients (baking soda, citric acid, cream of tartar and epsom salt) into a mixing bowl.

3. Put your shea butter into a heat safe container and melt it on a double boiler. Once melted, pour the shea butter on top of the dry ingredients.

4. Add the rest of the liquid ingredients (polysorbate 80 and Monkey Farts fragrance oil) and mix well. I will normally start mixing with a spatula, but in the end you will have to mix this with your hands.

5. Add your mica powder and mix well. For these cupcakes, I used a Dark Purple.

6. Spray the witch hazel on the mixture. Only do 1-2 sprays at a time. (You want to be sure not to add too much or it can cause fizzing). Then mix very well. To test the consistency, you will want to grab a handful of the mixture and squeeze it in your hand into a ball. Then from about 5 inches above the bowl, drop it. If it stays in the ball and doesn’t break apart, you are at the right consistency. If it breaks apart, just add another spray or two and test it again.

7. Grab a cupcake tin and place a silicone cupcake liner in it. Start to put the bath bomb mixture in, pressing down really hard. (You really need to pack it in the mold tight.

**Be sure to allow the bath bombs to dry for at least 24 hours before making the frosting.

Bubble Frosting Ingredients

bubble frosting ingredients

Baking Soda: The baking soda is the base of this recipe. There is not really a substitute for it.

SLSa: SLSa is a mild surfactant that is used to create bubbles in our bath. It can be irritating to your lungs when measuring and pouring, so be sure to wear a mask.

Meringue: The meringue powder is needed to help the frosting harden up. If you do not have merngue, you can swap it out for cream of tartar.

Cocamidopropyl Betaine: We use the cocomidopropyl betaine, because it is a mild and surfactant is compatible with anionic, cationic, and nonionic surfactants. Surfactants are what create the bubbles in this frosting. For more details on surfactants, check out my Surfactants Explained Post. This is the main liquid in the formula that creates the dough-like consistency.

Monkey Farts Fragrance Oil: I used the same Monkey Farts fragrance oil for my frosting that I did for the bath bomb. If you prefer, you can use a different fragrance for it. After I made it, I thought that a strawberry fragrance oil would pair nicely with the Monkey Farts.

Edible Sparkles: I love the way the finished bath bomb cupcakes looked, but it really felt like they were missing something. This is when I added the edible sparkles to it, sometimes it is the small details that take your project to the next level.

Making Bubble Frosting

1. Weigh out all of your ingredients.

2. Place the dry ingredients (baking soda, SLSa and meringue powder) into a mixing bowl.

3. Add your wet ingredients (cocamidopropyl betaine and Monkey Farts fragrance oil) on top of the dry ingredients. Mix well with a spatula. You will notice that the longer you mix, the more pliable the bubble frosting will get. After a few minutes, it will be at a consistency that you can pipe.

4. Put the bubble frosting into a pipping bag. I find that it is easier to get it into the pipping bag if you put the piping bag into a travel coffee cup. Once it is all in the bag twist the end shut and squeeze out any excess air from the bag.

5. Remove your cupcake bath bombs that you made. You are going to want to rub off any excess powder that is on the top or the sides of the bath bomb. We need to do this to ensure that our bubble frosting sticks to it.

6. Start by pipping a large dollop of frosting in the center of the bath bomb cupcakes. Then pipe around the cupcake until it is how you like it.

7. Grab a little bit of the edible sparkles and sprinkle them on the top of your cupcake. You are going to have to allow this to dry for at least 24 hours for the bubble frosting to dry. As it is drying, you are going to loose a little bit of the height of the frosting, so pipe it a little bit higher than you normally would to accommodate.
