Whipped candles are one of the most eye-catching candle styles you can make. In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to make a chocolate and toffee whipped candle that looks like a dessert but burns like a real candle.
This candle design features three layers:
- a rich chocolate candle base
- a whipped wax topping piped like frosting
- a decorative chocolate drizzle
The whipped wax technique creates a realistic dessert appearance, making these candles perfect for gifts, craft fairs, or dessert-themed candle collections.
Once you learn the whipped wax technique, you can easily customize candles with different fragrances, colors, and decorative toppings.

What Is a Whipped Candle?
A whipped candle is a container candle that uses wax whipped while cooling to create a texture similar to frosting. The wax is then piped onto the candle using a piping bag to create decorative swirls.
Soy wax works especially well for whipped candles because it stays soft long enough to whip before fully hardening.
Once piped, the wax holds its shape permanently, giving the candle a realistic dessert-style appearance.

How to Make a Chocolate and Toffee Whipped Candle
Step 1 – Prepare the Candle Container
Secure the wick in the center of your container.
You can use a wick sticker or a small amount of melted wax to hold it in place.

Step 2 – Melt the Wax for the Candle Base
Melt the soy wax using a double boiler.
To the wax add:
- brown candle dye
- a small amount of black dye
This creates a deep chocolate color for the candle base.

Step 3 – Add Fragrance Oil
Allow the wax to cool slightly, then add the fragrance oil.
Stir thoroughly to ensure the fragrance is evenly distributed.

Step 4 – Pour the Candle Base
Pour the wax into your container and allow it to cool completely.
The candle should be firm before adding the whipped wax topping.

I like to use a Sharpie to hold the wick in place.

How to Make Whipped Wax
Step 5 – Melt the Wax for the Whipped Topping
Melt the soy wax for the topping using a double boiler.
Allow it to cool until it reaches a thick consistency.
The wax should look similar to applesauce before whipping.

Step 6 – Whip the Wax
Using a hand mixer, begin whipping the wax as it cools.
Continue mixing until the wax becomes light and fluffy and can hold soft peaks.

Step 7 – Pipe the Whipped Wax
Transfer the whipped wax to a piping bag.
Pipe decorative swirls on top of the candle just like frosting on a cupcake.
Work quickly before the wax begins to harden.

Adding the Chocolate Drizzle
Melt a small amount of soy wax and add brown candle dye.
Allow the wax to cool slightly so it thickens before pouring.
Drizzle the wax across the whipped topping to create a chocolate syrup effect.

Optional Candle Decorations
You can decorate your candle further using:
- cinnamon sticks
- ground cinnamon
- wax embeds
Decorations help enhance the dessert candle aesthetic, making the candle look like a real dessert.

Finished Chocolate and Toffee Whipped Candle
Once the whipped wax and drizzle harden, your candle is finished.

Tips for Making Whipped Wax Candles
Whipped wax can take a little practice. These tips will help you get the best results.
Wait for the Right Wax Texture
The wax should cool until it thickens before whipping. If you whip too early, it will remain liquid.
Use Soy Wax
Soy wax is ideal for whipped candles because it stays workable longer than many other waxes.
Work Quickly
Once the wax reaches the correct consistency, pipe it quickly before it hardens.

How Long Should Whipped Candles Cure?
Like most soy candles, whipped candles should cure 1–2 weeks before burning.
Curing allows the fragrance oil to fully bind with the wax, improving scent throw.

Instructions
Candle Base
- Weigh out the wax and fragrance oil for the candle base.
- Put the soy wax into the pouring pot.
- Add the color to the soy wax. (To darken the brown, add black candle dye).
- Melt on a double boiler.
- While the wax is melting, place a small amount of hot glue on your wick tab and place it in the center of the cup.
- Once fully melted remove from heat.
- Once the temperature of the wax is below the flash point of your fragrance oil, add your chocolate and toffee fragrance oil. (The flash point on mine was 190°F.)
- Stir the wax and fragrance oil until the wax is in the desired pouring temperature range. (The wax I used had a suggested pouring temperature of 90° – 100° F.)
- Pour the wax into your candle and use a marker to hold the wick in the center of the candle.
Whipped Wax Topping
- Weigh out the wax and fragrance oil.
- Put the wax in a poring pot and place it on a double boiler.
- Once the wax is fully melted, remove from heat.
- Pour into a container that will be easier to mix in.
- When the temperature is below the flash point of your fragrance oil, add the fragrance oil.
- Mix and mix! You are going to want to give the wax a good mix every minute or so until you get a consistency that will hold it shape.
- Cut the corner off of a baggie and insert piping tip.
- Fill the baggie with your whipped wax.
- Pipe the whipped wax onto the top of the candle.
- Lightly dust the top of the candle with cinnamon.
- Place a cinnamon stick into the whipped wax, so it is still sticking out on one side.
Chocolate Drizzle
- Put a small amount of wax and candle colorant in the melting pot.
- Melt on a double boiler.
- Once melted, use a small spoon to drizzle the wax chocolate drizzle on your candle.
