Ingredient Details + Substitutions

solid ingredients used in making vegan lotion dots

Mango Butter

A lightweight butter that absorbs quickly and helps keep the lotion dots from feeling heavy.

Substitutions: Kokum butter or more shea butter (heavier feel)

Cocoa Butter

Adds firmness and structure so the lotion dots hold their shape. I prefer unrefined cocoa butter as it has that chocolatey scent.

Substitutions: Kokum butter (firmer, less scent)

Shea Butter

Adds a creamy, nourishing texture and improves spreadability. I use refined shea butter, you can use unrefined if you prefer.

Substitutions: Mango butter (lighter feel)

Apricot Kernel Oil

A lightweight oil that helps the lotion melt smoothly into the skin.

Substitutions: Sweet almond oil or grapeseed oil

Jojoba Oil

A liquid wax that helps balance the formula and improves skin feel. Jojoba oil closely resembles the sebum your skin makes naturally.

Substitutions: More apricot kernel oil or sweet almond oil

Candelilla Wax (Vegan Alternative to Beeswax)

Keeps the lotion dots solid. It has a higher melting point than beeswax, making it ideal for vegan recipes.

Substitutions: Carnauba wax (use slightly less)

Cetyl Alcohol

Reduces greasiness and adds a smooth, silky glide.

Substitutions: Cetearyl alcohol (slightly heavier feel)

Fragrance Oil

Adds scent to your lotion dots.

Substitutions: Essential oils (use skin-safe amounts)

Vitamin E

Helps slow oxidation of oils and adds minor skin benefits.

Substitutions: Optional, but recommended

Step 5: Add Color (Optional)

Divide into separate containers and add mica powder for color.

I feel like these look better with a bunch of different colors.

Step 6: Pour into Molds

Pour into silicone molds.

This can be time-consuming with small molds, but a scraper makes it much faster and cleaner.

If the mixture starts to harden up on you, you can set it back on the double boiler. I found the hot water in it is enough to make it liquid again.

Step 7: Let Them Set

Allow to harden at room temperature or place in the fridge for 20–30 minutes.

Step 8: Unmold

Gently remove from molds once fully solid.

  • Feet
  • Elbows

Troubleshooting Tips

Too Hard?
Reduce candelilla wax slightly.

Too Soft?
Increase wax slightly.

Too Greasy?
Increase cetyl alcohol or reduce oils slightly.

  • Since candelilla wax is firmer than beeswax, small adjustments make a big difference.
