Oil

Typically I like to use the less expensive oils in a rinse off product. However, with this lip scrub you are only using a very small amount of jojoba oil and it really does make a big difference. You can swap this out for grapeseed oil, avocado oil or really any other carrier oil that you would like. Jojoba oil closely resembles the sebum that our skin produces naturally. Since our lips do not produce oils, I like to use jojoba oil on my lips.

Exfoliants

jojoba beads

We are going with not one, but two different exfoliants in this recipe: sugar and jojoba beads. Now if you do not have jojoba beads, you can leave them out. Since our jojoba beads are heat sensitive, we are going to save those for the cool down phase. I really like the way they add just a bit of contrast to this scrub.

I am using granulated sugar as the main exfoliant. Now, you could swap this out for a salt, but I do not recommend it. No matter how hard you try to not get any of the lip scrub in your mouth, it always happens. Personally, I don’t vibe with a salty lip scrub.

Thickener/ Emulsifier

The stearic acid is used for multiple purposes in this lip scrub. I use the stearic acid to thicken this scrub up a little bit. One of the biggest struggles when you are using a lip scrub is that often times half the scrub falls off your lips before you ever get a chance to use it. By adding the stearic acid it thickens this scrub up enough to easily use it.

Another reason that we use steric acid is because it is an emulsifier. Basically, an emulsifier is going to bind with the oil when it gets wet and rinse it off. As an added bonus, the stearic acid actually makes the scrub feel like butter. I am absolutely in love with the finished texture of this scrub.

Flavoring / Colorant

For the flavoring, I am using Monkey Farts Flavoring Oil. It has a top note of fresh bananas and grapefruit, with middle notes of kiwi, bubble gum, and strawberries, with a hint of vanilla as a base note. It has no business smelling as good as it does!

And you might be wondering what it tastes like, It is kind of funny that it is called flavoring oil because the flavoring oil actually does not have a taste, just a scent.

Adding color to the lip scrub is completely optional, but you know that I cant resist adding a little pizzaz to my creations! I am using a small amount of mica powder to color it. When choosing the mica powder that you are going to use, it is important to make sure that it is lip safe. Not all mica powders are safe for use on your lips.

We use vitamin E oil to prevent oxidation in our oils. By using a small amount of Vitamin E oil, you can extend the shelf life of your lip scrub. Vitamin E oil is also going to help with adding some hydration and soothing properties to our scrub.
