Candle Making: Assembling Tabbed Wicks From A Spool

I personally enjoy assembling tabbed wicks from a spool of raw wick. Especially, because I like to make all kinds of different sized candles and I find it easier just to get the spools and cut it to my desired size.

Why do you prime the wick?

Anytime you are using a candle wick, you want to make sure that it is primed. Priming a wick means that you have put a coat of wax over it. This must be done before you put the tabs on your wicks.

Priming is important to ensure that your candle burns evenly. It also protects the wick. A cotton wick might absorb water and have difficulties burning. By putting a coat of wax over the wick, you give the wick a protective coat from any water.

Also, it would sure be hard to center the wick and get it to stand upright, if it didn’t have a coat of wax over it.

Equipment

• Double boiler
• Heat safe container
• Tin Foil or pan
• Pliers 

Ingredients

• Wick Spool
• Wick Tabs
• Candle Wax

Priming and assembling the tabbed wicks

1: Cut your desired length wicks from the spool.

2: Place a small amount of wax into a heat safe container. I use a small bowl, so it will be easier to soak the wicks in such a small amount of wax.

3: Heat the wax until it is fully melted on a double boiler.

4: Drop your wicks into the melted wax. You want to make sure they are completely covered in wax. To do this, just use a spatula to push them all the way into the wax.

5: Using pliers (or tweezers), remove the wicks from the wax one at a time. Allow any excess wax to drip back into the bowl.

6: Lay flat on the pan or tin foil.

7: When cooled, lift the wick off the pan.

8: Remove any excess wax on the tip of the wick. You can just pinch it off with your nail.

9: Put the end of the wick through the tab center.

10: Pinch the tab on the wick with you pilers.

11: Enjoy the wicks that you tabbed from a spool!
