Emulsified Salt Scrub: Formulating For Beginners

emulsified-salt-scrub

I am obsessed with exfoliating, so I decided to whip up this Oatmeal Milk and Honey Emulsified Salt Scrub! A ridiculous amount of hand sanitizer have my hands looking pretty rough. I love how gentle the scrub feels on my skin, but at the same time how good it is at sloughing off dead skin cells.

What is an emulsified salt scrub?

To make a salt scrub, it’s simple you just add oils and salt together. These scrubs have a few problems though. For one, they tend to separate in the container. Have you ever made one before and on the top sits a pile of oils? Another issue is that the oil doesn’t like to come off. It sticks to your hands, the sink, and the bottom of the top.

This is where our emulsifier comes in. The cool thing about emulsified scrubs are that they turn into a lotion on your skin. When the emulsified scrub makes contact with water, the emulsion begins. They also emulsify in your bath water. You never want to have oils without an emulsifier in the tub otherwise it winds up being pretty slippery.

Emulsified Salt Scrub Ingredient Overview

Before we get started, let’s go over the ingredients that we are going to use in this emulsified salt scrub.

Epsom salt

Epsom salt is a great exfoliator. On top of that it is said that it is able flush out toxins from our skin.

Dead Sea Salt

We are also going to use Dead Sea salt, which is packed with skin loving minerals. The high level of magnesium also helps with hydrating our skin.

Rice Bran Oil

Rice bran oil actually comes from the germ and inner husk of rice. It has the ability to be super hydrating to our skin because it is packed with fatty acids. It is a very light oil that soaks in fast.

Kokum Butter

Kokum butter helps to harden our scrub. It has moisturizing properties and is not likely to clog our pores.

Vitamin E Oil

We use Vitamin E oil as an antioxidant. It helps to extend the shelf life of our butters and oil.

Emulsifying wax

I love the way my skin feels after using a scrub, I just do not like when your skin is left feeling oily. The emulsifying wax binds with both oil and water. When the scrub is rinsed off, it grabs on to both the oil and the water, creating the lotion. And not leaving any extra oil behind.

Preservative

Technically, we do not need to add a preservative to this because it does not contain water. However, you want to think about how you are going to use this scrub. Is it in a container and used in a way that prevents water from getting in it? Probably not. Most likely, you will dip your wet hands right in the jar and scoop some out. That little bit of water that drips off your hands is why you should add a preservative.

Steric Acid

We use steric acid to help to harden the emulsified salt. It is also great at helping to stabilize our emulsion.

Customizing Your Exfoliator

If you want to change this scrub up a little bit, feel free to swap out your exfoliate to suit your needs. I would recommend sugar or brown sugar, but there are almost endless options. Click here to learn more about the different types of exfoliates and how to select the best one.

Making the Salt Finer

making the salt smaller

In this emulsified salt scrub, I do not want large abrasive salt pieces. To make the dead sea salt and Epsom salt finer, I just used a mortar and pestle. I want smaller salt pieces because they are less abrasive on our skin and I want a gentle exfoliator that can be used all over.
